From Startup Vision to AI Breakthrough: One Year with Safe Sign /en-us/posts/innovation/from-startup-vision-to-ai-breakthrough-one-year-with-safe-sign/ Fri, 12 Dec 2025 14:27:21 +0000 https://blogs.thomsonreuters.com/en-us/?post_type=innovation_post&p=68751 Last year, made its first pre-revenue acquisition in our 174-year history: Safe Sign, a startup focused on training large language models for the legal domain. This acquisition was more than a business decision. It was a conviction that the future of professional AI requires bringing together three rare ingredients that few organizations in the world possess: world-class expertise in training large-scale deep learning models, decades of highly curated authoritative content, and thousands of domain experts who understand what good looks like in high-stakes professional work.

Twelve months later, the collaboration between and Safe Sign continues to be one of the most exciting engines of innovation in our company. Together, we are building a foundation for the next era of professional-grade AI: one that combines frontier research, trusted data, and deep domain expertise.

Since joining , the Safe Sign team has become part of one integrated research organization within TR Labs, now known as Foundational Research. What began as a 15-person startup has grown into a 50-person global group that works seamlessly alongside our engineers, data scientists, and subject-matter experts across legal, tax, accounting, and compliance. Together, we are combining frontier research talent and deep domain expertise to accelerate development of the  large language model, trained on professional-grade data and purpose-built for high-stakes work.

General-purpose models have unlocked incredible capabilities in language understanding and reasoning. But professionals work differently, and their tools must reflect that. Broad models are not optimized for the standards of accuracy, context, and accountability that legal and tax professionals require. They are powerful, but they are not precise.

A purpose-built model changes that. By training a purpose built LLM on decades of content and data, and by learning directly from thousands of subject-matter experts, our model can reason the way professionals do. It can connect facts with context, apply appropriate logic to specific scenarios, and provide grounded, verifiable output that supports confident decision-making. The result will be a model designed not for conversation, but for action and trust. A model that understands how real professional work gets done.

“This first year has shown what happens when world-class AI research meets trusted domain expertise,” said , co-founder of Safe Sign and now Head of Foundational Research within TR Labs. Before joining , Jonathan spent seven years as a senior researcher at Google DeepMind, where he helped pioneer methods in large-scale model training and neural optimization. “We are combining deep technical innovation with the quality and structure of data,” he said. “That partnership allows us to move faster, train smarter, and build something truly differentiated for the professional world.”

The collaboration extends beyond our own teams. Through the new Frontier AI Lab with Imperial College London, co-led by Jonathan, we are tackling some of the most important challenges in AI, including safer model training, efficient evaluation, and the long-term societal impact of advanced systems. This partnership reflects our belief that responsible innovation begins with scientific rigor and openness.

All of this work is paving the way for what comes next. In 2026, we intend to bring to market the first large language model designed from the ground up for professional-grade performance. It will combine our trusted content, unique data architecture, and agentic AI capabilities to deliver accuracy, transparency, and reliability at scale.

We are building a future where intelligence is not abstract and relegated to the written word but applied and embodied via AI. An industry first, where AI becomes the operating layer for professional work. And where innovation happens not just in research labs, but in the hands of professionals who depend on to move faster, think smarter, and act with confidence.

In just one year, this collaboration has shown what’s possible when bold vision meets real‑world scale. The year ahead will push the boundaries of professional‑grade AI and set a new benchmark for what the industry can achieve.

What Brazil’s AI community is building next: Takeaways from BRACIS 2025 /en-us/posts/innovation/what-brazils-ai-community-is-building-next-takeaways-from-bracis-2025/ Thu, 09 Oct 2025 20:24:51 +0000 https://blogs.thomsonreuters.com/en-us/?post_type=innovation_post&p=67986 Fortaleza brought the heat in more ways than one. At the 35th Brazilian Conference on Intelligent Systems (BRACIS 2025), co-located with the Brazilian Symposium on Databases, roughly a thousand researchers, students, and industry builders compared notes on where AI is heading in Portuguese-speaking markets and beyond. We spent four packed days listening, learning, and swapping ideas at the Labs booth.

Theme 1: RAG is moving from “does it work” to “how do we make it excellent”
Large language models were everywhere, and the conversation has shifted from proofs of concept to the fine engineering details that make retrieval-augmented generation dependable. Talks explored better example selection for few-shot learning in named entity recognition, multi-objective prompt optimization, and practical ways to get more out of small language models for tasks like text-to-SQL. A strong current ran through sessions on self-supervised fine-tuning for low-resource settings in Portuguese, which matters when you want quality without ballooning labeling costs.

Why it matters: evaluation discipline wins. Techniques like smarter exemplar selection and targeted fine-tuning can squeeze more signal from smaller models, which is good for latency, cost, and control.

Theme 2: Legal AI in Brazilian Portuguese is coming of age
BRACIS has long welcomed legal NLP, but this year felt like an inflection point. Alongside papers, the program featured a legal-search hackathon, new datasets for Brazilian personal income tax Q&A with references, and applied work on pseudo-labeling to classify Brazilian Supreme Court (STF) documents. We also saw encouraging results from LoRA fine-tuning on specific layers for legal NER, plus efforts to train a Brazilian legal model on reputable sources such as academic papers, federal regulations, and Supreme Federal Court decisions.

Why it matters: the ecosystem is assembling the right ingredients for professional-grade systems in Portuguese. Grounded datasets with citations, efficient fine-tuning strategies, and domain-specific models support workflows where provenance and precision are non-negotiable.

Theme 3: Meta-learning and bio-inspired methods still matter
Beyond LLMs and RAG, BRACIS gave healthy space to meta-learning and bio-inspired algorithms. Meta-learning sessions underscored a practical goal: make models adapt faster with less data when tasks or domains shift. Bio-inspired talks reminded everyone that not every real-world problem yields to transformers, and that hybrid approaches can unlock performance in areas like optimization and scheduling.

Why it matters: adaptability is a feature, not a phase. As products meet new jurisdictions, document types, and regulatory changes, methods that shorten adaptation time will pay dividends for users and engineering teams.

Two sessions that stuck with us

  • Low-resource and Small Language Models. Four papers tackled few-shot NER, prompt optimization, text-to-SQL with SLMs, and self-supervised fine-tuning for Portuguese. The comparative analysis around example selection for NER offered heuristics worth testing in similar pipelines.
  • Legal Applications of NLP. A diverse slate showcased pseudo-labeling for STF document classification, LoRA strategies that improve legal NER with less compute, a cited Brazilian tax-law Q&A dataset, and a domain-trained Brazilian legal model. The common thread was rigor: use trusted sources, design for evaluation, and keep humans in the loop.

Conversations around the booth
Our booth became a meeting point for researchers, students, and practitioners from every region of Brazil. We spoke with public-sector technologists, members of national research institutes, and graduate students eager to apply their work to real-world legal and tax problems. The goal was twofold: highlight our growing technology presence in Brazil and connect with MSc and PhD candidates interested in applied AI. The interest was tangible, and we left with a full follow-up list of people and potential collaborations.

Why this matters
Brazil is one of the most dynamic AI communities in the world right now. The momentum in Fortaleza was not about flashy demos. It was about building dependable systems in Portuguese that cite sources, respect context, and meet the bar set by courts, regulators, and corporate clients. That is the kind of AI that will endure.

For us, BRACIS 2025 was a reminder that the future of professional-grade AI will be multilingual, domain-specific, and evaluation-first. It will favor designs that get more from less, and it will be built by researchers and engineers who know how to blend model craft with real-world constraints.

Obrigado, Fortaleza. We will be back.

How the Rise of Agentic AI is Revolutionizing Professional Work /en-us/posts/innovation/how-the-rise-of-agentic-ai-is-revolutionizing-professional-work/ Mon, 02 Jun 2025 09:09:36 +0000 https://blogs.thomsonreuters.com/en-us/?post_type=innovation_post&p=66051 Driven by relentless innovation, we’re witnessing a transformative shift in how technology shapes professional landscapes. The arrival of agentic artificial intelligence marks a significant milestone, ushering in an era where AI transcends traditional boundaries to become an essential partner in completing complex work. This evolution is not merely an upgrade; it’s a complete reimagining of how professionals will navigate their tasks, optimize strategies, and elevate decision-making processes in the years ahead.

Introducing CoCounsel with Agentic Intelligence

At , we’ve moved beyond offering only an AI assistant that simply responds to prompts. Our new agentic intelligence—available now in CoCounsel for tax, audit and accounting professionals—can plan, reason, and act within established workflows, completing complex multi-step assignments with unprecedented precision and accountability.

Let’s be clear: we are not just rebranding our AI assistant as “agentic.” We’re engineering full agentic systems—backed by trusted content, custom-trained models, and real domain expertise—that will give that assistant a new and more powerful way of working. This is the next generation of AI, and is once again setting the bar for professionals.

The distinction is crucial. Traditional AI assistants use the power of GenAI to produce impressive outputs when prompted correctly, but they cannot suggest and execute next steps within professional contexts. By contrast, CoCounsel with agentic intelligence understands goals holistically, breaks them into logical steps, uses the right tools to complete tasks, and—perhaps most important—escalates when human expertise is required for judgment calls or final decisions.

is leading the agentic AI generation

We’ve spent over a year developing our agentic platform, accelerated by our acquisition of Materia, the AI copilot startup specializing in agentic systems for tax and accounting. Rather than build standalone agentic tools, our goal has been to re-architect core product experiences. This approach involves drawing from the most critical features and content across platforms such as Checkpoint, Westlaw, and Practical Law, making their market-leading capabilities available as tools for the AI agents to use—enabling those agents to act and reason within already accepted industry best practices—and supercharging them with GenAI.

Agentic AI built for how professionals really work

CoCounsel Tax, one of our first fully realized agentic solutions, demonstrates this philosophy in action. It automates genuine tax professional workflows—from client file review to memo drafting and compliance checks—while providing explainable outputs and comprehensive audit trails. It connects firm knowledge, Checkpoint, Internal Revenue Code, and internal documents into a single AI-guided workspace.

Early customers are already seeing major benefits

“CoCounsel has revolutionized the way our team approaches our daily workload. Not only does CoCounsel save us countless hours of manual work, but it also allows us time to hone in on the more thought-intensive tasks we perform to enhance, strengthen, and optimize the way we serve our clients. CoCounsel doesn’t replace our expertise – it amplifies it.”
—Zachary Iannotta, CPA, Assurance Associate, HBK CPAs & Associates

“CoCounsel was a lifesaver for us this year. We brought on more business than expected—and the only way we kept up was with CoCounsel. It took the most time-consuming part of our work—researching state requirements—and turned it into something we could trust and reuse.”
—Rich Marlatt, Chief Information Officer, BLISS 1041

This is just the beginning. We’re extending agentic capabilities across legal, risk, and compliance workflows. In tax and accounting, we’re currently developing Ready to Review, an agentic experience that can draft tax returns in GoSystem Tax, adapt to system feedback, and resolve diagnostics—showcasing the next frontier of professional AI that can work with tools, not just alongside them.

For legal professionals, agentic workflows for drafting, policy generation, and deposition analysis are already in development, with much more to come.

Even with AI advancements, humans need to remain in the loop

With agentic AI, human-AI collaboration is set to redefine how tasks are accomplished. A crucial aspect of this integration is the concept of human-in-the-loop. Throughout the AI model lifecycle, human involvement is indispensable. In developing AI solutions, domain experts play a vital role in evaluating model responses to ensure they meet professional standards and ethical guidelines. This human oversight continues when AI models are integrated into products or internal workflows, ensuring continuous monitoring and validation of model outputs.

Take CoCounsel Tax, for example. We leverage the expertise of 180 tax and accounting editors to build and refine our AI solutions. These professionals monitor model responses during the pre- and post-development, training, and deployment phases, safeguarding the accuracy and reliability of AI outputs. By maintaining human oversight, we ensure AI systems not only support but enhance the professional standards across industries, empowering professionals to make informed decisions with confidence.

Moreover, we emphasize to our customers the importance of validating the integrity and accuracy of information and work completed with AI assistance. Launches AI-Assisted Research on Westlaw and Additional Generative AI-Powered Solutions /en-us/posts/innovation/thomson-reuters-launches-ai-assisted-research-on-westlaw-and-additional-generative-ai-powered-solutions/ Mon, 13 Nov 2023 18:55:04 +0000 https://blogs.thomsonreuters.com/en-us/?post_type=innovation_post&p=61821 today announced a series of generative AI initiatives designed to transform the legal profession. Headlining these initiatives is.

Available now to customers in the United States, this skill helps legal professionals quickly get to answers for complex research questions. This generative AI skill leverages innovation in Casetext, created by taking a “best of” approach using the Generative AI Platform.

With AI-Assisted Research and, attorneys are empowered with eight generative AI-powered core skills, including AI-Assisted Research on Westlaw Precision, Prepare for a Deposition, Draft Correspondence, Search a Database, Review Documents, Summarize a Document, Extract Contract Data, and Contract Policy Compliance. The company also laid out high-level product roadmaps to develop numerous additional generative AI skills to address customer-specific needs. Each additional skill will be built on a common software framework within the Generative AI Platform.

AI-Assisted Research allows customers to ask complex legal research questions in natural language and quickly receive synthesized answers, with links to supporting authority from Westlaw content and links to further examine that authority. AI-Assisted Research streamlines the initial phase of legal research with sophisticated answers to questions and the authority those answers are based on, saving hours of work. These responses are founded on more than 150 years of classification, analysis, and editorial expertise contributed by subject matter experts and attorney editors.

AI-Assisted Research employs Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) to prevent the large language models (LLMs) from making up things like case names and citations by focusing the LLMs on the actual language of Westlaw content. Future plans include expanding generative AI throughout the research process in Westlaw and bringing these capabilities to versions of Westlaw outside the United States.

Also, the company announced that it will be building on the AI assistant experience Casetext created with CoCounsel, the world’s first AI legal assistant. Later in 2024, will launch an AI assistant that will be the interface across products with generative AI capabilities.

The AI assistant, called CoCounsel, will be fully integrated with multiple legal products, including Westlaw Precision, Practical Law Dynamic Tool Set, Document Intelligence, and HighQ, and will continue to be available on the CoCounsel application as a destination site.
