The key enhancements reflect the principles driving our roadmap: Agentic AI grounded in deep legal expertise, capabilities rooted in your own knowledge and workflows, and built to elevate the way modern legal teams operate.

Rooted in Your Knowledge

Draft an Agreement Based on Your Precedent & Practical Law Content

Draft agreements faster without starting from scratch as CoCounsel’s drafting agent enables U.S. users to generate a comprehensive first draft in minutes using a trusted precedent or a Practical Law Standard Document. Simply upload source material, add key details and requirements, and CoCounsel analyzes the template, applies its structure and style, and produces a tailored multi‑page draft aligned to the instructions provided. The result is a quicker path from blank page to a client-ready draft in a streamlined workflow with less manual assembly allowing users to spend more time reviewing, negotiating, and advising. Review and then export to Microsoft Word when ready.

Draft a new agreement with Practical Law

My Clauses

Using the new My Clauses in CoCounsel (U.S.), transactional lawyers can build a personal, searchable library of preferred contract provisions saved from playbooks, draft and modify outputs, or added manually so the right language is always within reach. Find what is needed in seconds, tailor it to the specific matter, and reuse it instantly across new agreements. That means less time hunting through old files, fewer drafting interruptions, more consistency across matters, and faster turnaround from first draft to final.

My Clauses

Built for How You Work

Draft Editor

Draft Editor is an integrated editing environment available in the U.S., UK, Canada, and Australia that lets users refine AI-generated outputs directly in their browser – no need to export to Word or switch applications. Available across key skills including Review Documents, Draft, Summarize, and Timeline, simply click ‘open editor’ to start refining work. By enabling in-place editing, it keeps users focused on their work instead of managing workflow. The result: faster turnaround times, fewer interruptions, and a seamless path from AI assistance to polished work product.

CoCounsel Global Draft Editor

Region Settings

Now available in the U.S., UK, Canada and Australia, lawyers can access a flexible, jurisdiction selection feature built directly into CoCounsel for Microsoft Word that enables seamless switching between region content and localization – regardless of regional subscription. Users also can access corresponding Westlaw and Practical Law content from existing subscriptions without purchasing separate regional entitlements or managing multiple logins. Additionally, an improved capability to switch between jurisdictions eliminates geographical limitations in the drafting workflow.

Citations Format Update

CoCounsel now delivers citations as endnotes (with hyperlinks) instead of footnotes in the U.S., UK, Canada and Australia – so your finished Word document reads cleanly from start to finish – a key preference often heard from customers. When exporting the output of any CoCounsel skill or workflow, citations appear at the end of the document, and each in-text citation links to the supporting source and back again. This creates less scrolling and fewer distractions while the work is reviewed, shared, and finalized, especially on longer drafts and research-heavy documents. The in-app experience stays the same; this update improves the readability of exported documents while keeping sources easy to verify.

Tabular Analysis

Tabular analysis is now available in Canadian French. Users can review up to 10,000 documents and 100 questions, viewing the results in a dynamic, filterable table format. This flexible capability enables users to add or remove files or questions mid-review, analyze results in a three-pane viewer, and run multiple tables simultaneously. The powerful solution significantly reduces document review time while enabling easy verification with clickable footnotes. This allows legal professionals to concentrate more on strategic, high-value tasks, and enhancing productivity while reducing valuable resource needs.

Ready to Review named a 2026 Top New Product by Accounting Today /en-us/posts/innovation/thomson-reuters-ready-to-review-named-a-2026-top-new-product-by-accounting-today/ Tue, 03 Feb 2026 14:20:44 +0000 https://blogs.thomsonreuters.com/en-us/?post_type=innovation_post&p=69289 has recognized as a 2026 Top New Product in the publication’s Tax Tools category. They also awarded an Honorable Mention to . I’m proud to share this recognition because it reflects something I hear consistently from firm leaders: the need to deliver high-quality work with more consistency—under real capacity pressure.

Tax, Audit and Accounting has always been a profession built on rigor and responsibility. But the reality of running a modern practice is complexity keeps rising, timelines keep tightening, and client expectations keep evolving. Firms are being asked to do more, faster—without compromising quality.

 Ready to Review

Why this matters for firms

This recognition is not just about a new solution being introduced—it’s about what firms are prioritizing right now. Across the industry, leaders are focused on creating repeatable capacity—not just surviving busy season. They’re prioritizing workflows that are reliable year-round. That means reducing friction in the return process, improving consistency across teams, and ensuring professionals have the time to apply judgment where it matters most.

That’s the lens I bring to . It’s designed to support the parts of the tax return process that can slow teams down, so professionals can stay focused on the work of humans: review, judgment, accountability, and advising clients with confidence.

Restoring time for professional judgment

There’s a lot of discussion about automation and the future of work. What I see in firms today is more practical: talented professionals spending too much time on repetitive steps, and not enough time on review, coaching, and client conversations.

The opportunity here is to shift time back to the professional—so firms can:

  • Strengthen quality and consistency
  • Improve responsiveness to clients
  • And make the work more sustainable for teams

Honorable Mention: Ready to Advise

Accounting Today also gave an Honorable Mention to , which supports tax planning and advisory services.

That matters because once firms create more capacity, the next question is how to use it. Many firms are looking to grow advisory in a way that’s scalable and consistent – grounded in strong workflows and clear client outcomes.

Recognition like this is meaningful for us at . But it’s even more meaningful because it reflects progress our customers can feel. When firms can rely on their technology to create more capacity and consistency in the work, they can serve clients with greater confidence. They can support their teams through peak demand, and make the practice more sustainable. That’s the kind of win we’re focused on: one that strengthens firms and the professionals who power them.

Transforming Busy Season: Introducing Ready to Review, Agentic AI for 1040 Preparation /en-us/posts/innovation/introducing-ready-to-review-thomson-reuters-agentic-ai-for-1040-prep/ Mon, 15 Dec 2025 16:57:32 +0000 https://blogs.thomsonreuters.com/en-us/?post_type=innovation_post&p=68794 Over the last year, we’ve talked a lot about how AI will change the game for tax professionals. Today (December 15), that future becomes more real in a very practical way with the launch of .

Ready to Review is our new cloud-based, agentic AI tax workflow solution built on CoCounsel. For tax year 2025, it modernizes 1040 tax return preparation. It’s designed to take on the heavy, repetitive work of gathering client documents and preparing returns—so tax professionals can focus on what drew many of us to this profession in the first place: problem solving, critical thinking, and delivering great counsel to clients.

For too long, firms have been stuck in a pattern that everyone recognizes as unsustainable—ever more complex returns, tighter deadlines, and mounting pressure on teams already stretched thin. Busy season has become synonymous with burnout and staffing strain. AI alone won’t fix that. But AI put to work in the right way—through agentic AI deeply embedded into tax workflows—can fundamentally change the equation.

A Better Way Through Busy Season

The goal is not to replace professional judgment, but to clear away the manual, time-consuming tasks that prevent professionals from using that judgment to its fullest. Ready to Review gives firms a single, cloud-based, scalable platform that automates the gather and tax prep stages of theworkflow—helping firms manage more individual returns with existing staff whilemaintainingquality and control.

We’realready seeing the impact. Indiana-based CLH CPAs & Consultantsparticipatedin our early adopter program and sawthe potential fortransformative time savings. As Bob Lange, Partner at CLH, told us:“Reducing return preparation time byapproximately anhour on each simple 1040 is significant in terms of efficiency gains. For firms like ours, these time savings will be a game changer.”

I’vesaid before that I expect firms willultimately paireach CPA with at least one virtual agent. is a tangible step in that direction. It brings that 1:1 vision closer to reality by embedding Gather and Tax Preparer AI agents directly into the 1040 workflow in a waythat’sresponsible, auditable, and grounded in trusted tax content and complianceexpertise.

The Next Step for 1040 Prep

As solutions like Ready to Review become part of the day-to-day fabric of tax work,we’llsee fewer 80-hourweeksand more time spent on the nuanced, client-focused work that truly differentiates firms. We’llmake room for new talent who are excited about a career that leans into analysis and advisory rather than pure grind.

Ready to Review is now generally available in the United States for 1040 use cases, and its launch marks an important milestone in our broader journey with agentic AI on the platform. It’sone more waywe’rehelping firms modernize in a way that is practical, grounded, and built for the realities of tax season.

The Must-Have Skill for First Year Legal Associates: Adaptability /en-us/posts/innovation/the-must-have-skill-for-first-year-legal-associates-adaptability/ Wed, 27 Aug 2025 15:35:43 +0000 https://blogs.thomsonreuters.com/en-us/?post_type=innovation_post&p=67370 As summer associate programs come to an end, another new generation of first year law firm associates is entering the professional workforce. While this historic rite of passage has deep roots in the rich tradition of apprenticeship and professional development that has sustained the legal profession for centuries, first-year associates face an unprecedented challenge: succeeding in an industry transforming at breakneck speed.

The most important skill new lawyers will need to thrive isn’t encyclopedic knowledge of case law, razor-sharp logic, or the ability to tolerate long hours – it’s adaptability. But what does that actually mean for a first-year associate starting their first job at a law firm? It means approaching the role as a continuous learner rather than someone who has “arrived” with their JD in hand.

Building An Adaptability Toolkit

Developing adaptability isn’t about becoming a generalist who can do everything – it’s about becoming someone who can quickly learn what each situation requires. Start by cultivating core habits and building your adaptability toolkit by:

Embracing technology: View legal technology as a collaborator, not a threat. The associates who thrive will be those who become fluent in leveraging the latest tools to produce higher-quality work more efficiently. According to a recent study, 28% of law firms are already using generative AI (GenAI) in their practices and 93% say GenAI will be a central part of their organization’s workflow within the next five years. So next time your firm introduces new research platforms or AI tools, volunteer to part of the beta test rather than waiting for mandatory training. This positions you as someone who embraces innovation rather than fears it.

Seek feedback on efficiency, not just accuracy: An adaptable associate might ask: “I completed this document review in eight hours – what would help me provide the same quality analysis in six hours next time?” This mindset shifts from time-based to value-based thinking, positioning new lawyers for success in an evolving market – and AI can help make this a reality by completing select tasks that take valuable time.

Participating in new experiences early in your career: Volunteer for cross-practice projects, client secondments, or firm innovation initiatives. The broader your exposure to different ways of practicing law, the more adaptable you’ll be when change inevitably happens. For example, if you’re a corporate associate, volunteer to help the litigation team with a discovery project – you’ll learn how the contracts you draft might be evaluated in disputes.

For first year associates to prove their value in this new world, it will require more than just hard work. You should put your energy toward higher-value tasks that put an emphasis on soft skills like adaptability, creativity, leadership, curiosity, and tech fluency. The work is no longer just about the volume of output produced; it is about leveraging all available resources – including technology – to achieve successful outcomes.

Lead Change, Don’t Just Follow It

To that end, adaptability remains the thing that will quickly separate the future leaders from the rest of the pack of first-year associates entering the legal workforce. While versatility as a skillset is not as easy to quantify as billable hours, it is a far more accurate measure of how well new attorneys are able to recognize new opportunities, embrace creative problem-solving, and adopt new approaches focused on achieving the best end result. This is the factor that will help law firms navigate the next decade of transformation – and the individuals prioritizing adaptability early in their careers will set themselves up as key drivers of the firm’s overall success.

Clients are demanding more value, transparency, and efficiency. Legal technology – from AI-assisted research tools to automated contract analysis – is redefining how law firms deliver services.

Today’s most effective legal professionals are those willing to rethink entrenched practices, test new technologies, and collaborate in ways that break down traditional silos. Adaptability in this context means not just keeping up with change but leading it. Start building your adaptability toolkit today, and you’ll be positioned to lead tomorrow’s legal innovations rather than scramble to catch up with them.

How the Rise of Agentic AI is Revolutionizing Professional Work /en-us/posts/innovation/how-the-rise-of-agentic-ai-is-revolutionizing-professional-work/ Mon, 02 Jun 2025 09:09:36 +0000 https://blogs.thomsonreuters.com/en-us/?post_type=innovation_post&p=66051 Driven by relentless innovation, we’re witnessing a transformative shift in how technology shapes professional landscapes. The arrival of agentic artificial intelligence marks a significant milestone, ushering in an era where AI transcends traditional boundaries to become an essential partner in completing complex work. This evolution is not merely an upgrade; it’s a complete reimagining of how professionals will navigate their tasks, optimize strategies, and elevate decision-making processes in the years ahead.

Introducing CoCounsel with Agentic Intelligence

At , we’ve moved beyond offering only an AI assistant that simply responds to prompts. Our new agentic intelligence—available now in CoCounsel for tax, audit and accounting professionals—can plan, reason, and act within established workflows, completing complex multi-step assignments with unprecedented precision and accountability.

Let’s be clear: we are not just rebranding our AI assistant as “agentic.” We’re engineering full agentic systems—backed by trusted content, custom-trained models, and real domain expertise—that will give that assistant a new and more powerful way of working. This is the next generation of AI, and is once again setting the bar for professionals.

The distinction is crucial. Traditional AI assistants use the power of GenAI to produce impressive outputs when prompted correctly, but they cannot suggest and execute next steps within professional contexts. By contrast, CoCounsel with agentic intelligence understands goals holistically, breaks them into logical steps, uses the right tools to complete tasks, and—perhaps most important—escalates when human expertise is required for judgment calls or final decisions.

is leading the agentic AI generation

We’ve spent over a year developing our agentic platform, accelerated by our acquisition of Materia, the AI copilot startup specializing in agentic systems for tax and accounting. Rather than build standalone agentic tools, our goal has been to re-architect core product experiences. This approach involves drawing from the most critical features and content across platforms such as Checkpoint, Westlaw, and Practical Law, making their market-leading capabilities available as tools for the AI agents to use—enabling those agents to act and reason within already accepted industry best practices—and supercharging them with GenAI.

Agentic AI built for how professionals really work

CoCounsel Tax, one of our first fully realized agentic solutions, demonstrates this philosophy in action. It automates genuine tax professional workflows—from client file review to memo drafting and compliance checks—while providing explainable outputs and comprehensive audit trails. It connects firm knowledge, Checkpoint, Internal Revenue Code, and internal documents into a single AI-guided workspace.

Early customers are already seeing major benefits

“CoCounsel has revolutionized the way our team approaches our daily workload. Not only does CoCounsel save us countless hours of manual work, but it also allows us time to hone in on the more thought-intensive tasks we perform to enhance, strengthen, and optimize the way we serve our clients. CoCounsel doesn’t replace our expertise – it amplifies it.”
—Zachary Iannotta, CPA, Assurance Associate, HBK CPAs & Associates

“CoCounsel was a lifesaver for us this year. We brought on more business than expected—and the only way we kept up was with CoCounsel. It took the most time-consuming part of our work—researching state requirements—and turned it into something we could trust and reuse.”
—Rich Marlatt, Chief Information Officer, BLISS 1041

This is just the beginning. We’re extending agentic capabilities across legal, risk, and compliance workflows. In tax and accounting, we’re currently developing Ready to Review, an agentic experience that can draft tax returns in GoSystem Tax, adapt to system feedback, and resolve diagnostics—showcasing the next frontier of professional AI that can work with tools, not just alongside them.

For legal professionals, agentic workflows for drafting, policy generation, and deposition analysis are already in development, with much more to come.

Even with AI advancements, humans need to remain in the loop

With agentic AI, human-AI collaboration is set to redefine how tasks are accomplished. A crucial aspect of this integration is the concept of human-in-the-loop. Throughout the AI model lifecycle, human involvement is indispensable. In developing AI solutions, domain experts play a vital role in evaluating model responses to ensure they meet professional standards and ethical guidelines. This human oversight continues when AI models are integrated into products or internal workflows, ensuring continuous monitoring and validation of model outputs.

Take CoCounsel Tax, for example. We leverage the expertise of 180 tax and accounting editors to build and refine our AI solutions. These professionals monitor model responses during the pre- and post-development, training, and deployment phases, safeguarding the accuracy and reliability of AI outputs. By maintaining human oversight, we ensure AI systems not only support but enhance the professional standards across industries, empowering professionals to make informed decisions with confidence.

Moreover, we emphasize to our customers the importance of validating the integrity and accuracy of information and work completed with AI assistance. By verifying the outputs, professionals safeguard against potential errors and maintain the high standards expected in their fields. Our products make this easy by providing citations, so our customers always know the source for the information provided. This ensures that AI serves as a valuable tool that complements human expertise, rather than replacing it, reinforcing the collaborative nature of modern professional environments.

This transformation won’t happen overnight, but it is happening now. The era of agentic intelligence has begun, and it promises to redefine what’s possible for professionals across industries. At , we’re proud to be leading the way.
